Chapter 13

Let’s Watch the Boys at Play

Early Friday morning, on the day after the meeting with Yanuka took place, a new shift of the surveillance crew was set up in Abu-Hassan’s residential neighborhood on Rome’s outskirts. Wearing a laborer’s cap, large black sunglasses, a thin beige coat closed over his shirt, and jeans, the man left the large apartment block, walked quickly to his car, and made a swift exit from the parking lot. A tracking GPS device attached to it, and perfectly broadcasting locations, the white Fiat Punto made its way to the nearby mosque. As they approached the building and its typical muezzin’s minaret, the walkie-talkie report informed the team, that the chap must be on his way to pray, the first of his daily prayers. Despite the very early hour, more than a hundred people seemed to be there already to say their holy Friday prayers, before heading off to their jobs because, as far as Rome was concerned, this was just another regular workday. As prayers came to a close, Rome’s suburban streets were filling with cars flowing into the city.

On reaching the mosque, Abu-Hassan went over to the water fountain taps, and carefully washed his hands and feet. Slipping out of his shoes, he left them at the door, at almost the same instant as another guy more or less his age and height, arrived on foot and left his large leather sandals at the door. The two, who seemed strangers to each other, merged into the crowd of worshipers streaming into the mosque. Abu-Hassan held a large paper shopping bag in Benetton colors. Moshiko, reporting Abu-Hassan’s entry into the mosque, paid close attention to where the latter left his shoes, and settled down to overlook the doorway and the shoes.

Inside, Abu-Hassan kneeled on his prayer mat. Next to him, was the man who’d entered at the same time, also wearing jeans. Prayers would soon end. Just then Abu-Hassan gave the man next to him, his car keys, the beige coat, the cap and sunglasses, and the Benetton carry bag, after removing a roll of cloth from it and hurrying to the toilets inside the building.

The unknown guy rose together with the first people readying to leave the mosque. He put the coat on over his clothes, slipped the hat and sunglasses on, and picked up the bag. Leaving, he made sure he was in the middle of a large crowd of worshipers. At the entrance, he put his feet into Abu-Hassan’s shoes, and continued on with the crowd, now spreading into the parking lot, hurrying away in the Fiat. The team was right after him. In the toilets, Abu-Hassan donned the traditional ankle length Jellabiya, wrapped a turban on his head, put on a pair of clear lensed glasses, stuck a mustache and beard on his face, and quickly left the mosque. Leaving with the last crowd of worshipers, he looked down and broke into a smile: his shoes were gone. Only the sandals were left.
